At the edge of a forest lived a cat called Jenny. She had a neighbour called Tofu - a brown dog. They always played together.
One weekend, Jenny’s parents decided to have picnic in the forest. Early in the morning, Grandma packed sandwiches, juice, chocolate and biscuits into a basket
for them. She reminded them not to go too deep into the forest and return home before sunset.
“We cats always leave trails allowing us to trace our way back.” assured Jenny.
As they entered the forest, Jenny spotted a butterfly and wanted to take a picture of it.
They followed the butterfly and, at last, it landed close enough for Jenny to take some excellent shots.
The cats were happy, but soon very sad to realise that they forgot to leave trails. They were lost and it was dark. Even with cat-like treads and super night-vision, they stepped
onto a pile of leaves which collapsed into a hole.
Jenny fell. Her mother grabbed Jenny’s tail and Jenny’s father grabbed her mother’s tail. They fell in a chain into a deep hole.
Inside the hole was a snake coiled in a corner. It looked hideous,
covered with green spots. The cats were shocked.
“Why are you here?” asked Jenny’s father.
“Well, this is my home, isn’t it?” the snake said, “But I'm a vegetarian snake. I won’t eat you.”
Jenny’s father shuffled the other two cats behind him.
The snake continued, “A long time ago, I caught a bird and wanted to eat it. The bird told me that eating meat was not healthy and introduced me to honey. I tried some and it was delicious. So I switched my diet from animals to honey and fruits."
Jenny’s father was not sold on the idea. He divided the night into three shifts of night watch. He took the first shift. Jenny and her mother were soon asleep.
Jenny’s father ended up taking all three shifts. At dawn, Jenny was awaken by a familiar voice.
Grandma was worried and asked Tofu to help. He gathered a team and started searching as soon as dawn broke. He sniffed along and came to a pile of leaves. He picked up the scent of Jenny, which he was familiar with.
He woofed at the hole,
“Jenny, are you here?”
Jenny answered in delight. Tofu gathered the team but the shaft was narrow and slippery. The rescuers could not get in and the cats could not get out.
The snake said, “We have been here for the whole night and I did not hurt you.
Now let me stretch myself along the shaft so that you have a better grip to climb up.”
The cats climbed up and were saved. They now knew that the snake was really a good snake. They welcome the snake to be their friend.
Jenny remembered something and asked
her father, “Why did you shuffle us behind you when we saw the snake and why did you take all shifts of night watch?”
He said, “Because I love you and wanted to protect you.”1 / 12
