The Campbell family was a strange family. They lived in a huge campervan and travelled the world. The children did not go to school. They learned all their lessons on the road. Haylee, 12, was the oldest, cleverest and most responsible. She took care of Hayden, 8, and Haydee, 3.

One sunny morning, the family was in Ghana, West Africa, learning about the history of the people. They were driving around a mountain looking for a fresh food market. Suddenly, they were lost. A purple wind blew over the van. Hayden covered his nose and shouted, ‘Aw, poo. What stinks?’

Both girls said, ‘It wasn’t me!’ Mum said, ‘Shhh, what’s all the noise? Wait, what’s that smell?’ Something smells like a rubbish truck! Dad was that you?’ ‘No, it’s not me! It’s coming from outside,’ said dad. The smelly purple wind blew them into a dark purple chute.

In a short minute, the family found that they were in London! All the buildings were the same, old and dirty but the river Thames was full of rubbish and the air smelled like a rubbish dump. The streets were empty. The family stared out of the windows in shock.

Dad stopped the van and said, ‘Wait here, kids. I’m going to find out what on earth just happened.’ While they were waiting, the children looked up and saw two boys wearing black clothes and face masks. When they saw the kids in the van, they quickly closed the blinds.

The children started to ask mum a lot of questions that she could not answer. Dad came back holding a newspaper. Suddenly, mum had all the answers. She explained, ‘We are in the year 2117. The headline says, “World in danger!”’ ’What’s that mean?’ said Haydee.

‘”First ships to depart for Planet Safegapore in two weeks. Please pack your things.” ‘Maybe it’s too polluted for people to live here,’ suggested dad sadly. ‘That means we are going to Safegapore too! What can we do?’ asked Hayden. ‘I don’t know,’ said mum.

Suddenly a policeman came over and said, ‘Go back to your home and pack your things!’ ‘Sorry, Sir, we do not have a home here. We live in this van and we are from the past! Maybe we can help you so you don’t need to leave,’ said dad.

After a minute of thought, Haylee said, ‘Sir, do you mind taking some photos of the city? If I upload the photos on facebook, everyone will know what will happen in the future.’ ‘That’s a good idea, Haylee, but how can we get back to 2017?’ asked dad.

‘How did you get here?’ asked the policeman. ‘From the smelly purple chute,’ called Haydee from the back seat. ‘Oh, the purple chute will appear anytime, anywhere,’ said the policeman, ‘You’ll have to wait.’ Eventually, after a day of waiting, the purple chute appeared. They quickly got in the van.

They followed the purple wind. In one short minute they arrived back in 2017. Haylee uploaded all the photos on Facebook and hash tagged all the news channels. Over the next 100 years, people got better at protecting the environment. Everyone thanked the Campbell family. They were heroes.
