After reading a book about volunteers, I want to help others, too. Can I be a volunteer?

I rushed to Mum and asked her. Mum said, ‘I remember that there is a social service centre nearby. They may need helpers. Ask Dad to join us! ‘Great!’ I yelled.

Next day, a social worker in the centre, Miss Kam, greeted us, ‘We need a helping hand from the community. You can visit and bring presents to old ladies that live alone nearby. Let them know someone care for them. They will be happy to see you!’ I nodded.

On Sunday, Dad, Mum and I brought presents to three solitary old ladies. The presents were heavy!

We knocked on the door of a flat, but no one answered. I shouted, ‘Anybody’s home?’ An old lady opened the door and let us in. We gave her presents. She was glad, ‘Thank you all!’ Later we found that she had serious hearing problems. She chatted with us.

Then, we headed for the second old lady’s home. Her house was dark because her lamp was broken. At first, she didn’t talk much, but we kept concerning her. Later she was happier We had a good time. She even led us to the lift!

Then we went to the third lady’s home. We sat down on her sofa. She frowned because her husband got sick and had been in hospital for two months. She visited him twice a day, and got very tired. We comforted. She seemed to feel better and smiled.

We returned to the centre, and told Miss Kam what we did. She said, “You are doing great!’

I said to Mum. ‘Helping others is happy! I can be of some value to others! I know how to love and care for people, in turn, I am happier!’
