From his earliest memories, Phil had never wanted anything his life. He lived in a huge mansion, with more rooms than he could count. The finest chefs in the world were flown to his home by private jet to prepare lavish banquets for him.

There were always people around Phil, asking favors. Phil would roll his eyes, scrunch up his nose, and then theatrically point his chin and say, “I hereby grant you what you want. He was helpful but arrogant.

One day, everyone was talking about the breaking news - Phil’s family business has bankrupted! From now on, Phil was poor. He had to hold back tears of embarrassment and shame. He was lost in his thoughts. He couldn’t move.

While most people teased and gossiped, a few showed sympathy toward Phil. Those few visited to comfort Phil and gave hospitality. Soon, they became good friends. Phil learned to be humble and nice. He learned that every time he helps, it left a fluttery feeling in his heart.

One late night a tragedy happened. While he was limping home from work, Phil began to feel lightheaded. Suddenly, he stumbled, banging his head onto a metal pole, and was knocked unconscious.

There was a large gash on his forehead where he scraped it on the rough metal. His blood was flooding out. He was floating up above the white fluffy clouds. The next thing he knew, he was in Heaven.

In Heaven, he sat on a large comfortable couch, and stared at a computer on the table in front of him. There was a cup of warm tea and a platter of cookies on the table, and beautiful tapestries hung on the white walls.

The carpet had flower patterns woven into the soft material. The computer spoke up in a metallic voice,

    “Welcome to Heaven.”

“ Oh! I’m dead? Well, what a surprise!” Phil exclaimed.

“How did you enjoy your past life?”

Phil’s grinned, “At first, I didn’t think much of anyone, I just gave them money so they would leave me alone. But now, I love helping others through the influence of my friends.”

“Great! you have helped many in your past life, and it has been decided that you have a choice for your next life. Name it and it will come true.” The keyboard showed images and captions of jobs, and a small hologram of where to live around the computer.

Phil paused, brought his cup of tea to his lips with his pinky pointed. He slurped loudly. Then he smiled and decided, “ In my next life, I wish to be around by many friends, and to keep helping others.

“Consider it done.” The screen showed the image of Phil surrounded by the people he helped. And the next thing Phil knew, he had become a bestie of hundreds.

"Being kind is the first step to show your true, giving self that plants the seed to make a better world.”
