The Special Painting
Gretchen and Regina examined the paintings in the hallways of the art museum. "Which one are we looking for again?" asked Regina. "The one with a spooky house and a dead garden."
Gretchen and Regina were looking for a painting which was known to have a ghost living in it. There were many scary stories about that ghost in the spooky house.
"We are going to find out the truth about that painting!" said Gretchen. "There! We found it!" said Regina, pointing to a painting. They examined it, smelled it, touched it and looked at it with a magnifying glass. "Nothing!" said Gretchen.
Just as the girls were going to turn around, Regina saw a white shadow floating pass the window inside the spooky house of the painting. "Gretchen! See!?"Regina pulled Gretchen back to the painting.
The shadow stopped, Regina and Gretchen took out a magnifying glass to see two groggily eyes staring at them. "Aahhh!" screamed Gretchen, Regina just stood there, white with shock as the white shadow disappeared.
"We'll freak out as soon as we get home." said Regina, scrambling to the entrance.
At Regina's home, Gretchen slammed the door shut and they hurried to Regina's room.
They were silent for a solid minute, thinking about what they just saw and did. Regina finally said, "Gretchen, I think we should find out more about that ghost." "Me too, but we aren't sure if it really is a ghost..." said Gretchen.
"We have to find out the meaning of this painting to see the reason the ghost was in it" said Regina.
The next morning, Regina was having breakfast and she saw newspapers on the table, she was shocked when she read the headline, "Ghost found in spooky painting" She quickly finished breakfast, grabbed the newspaper and ran to school.
Gretchen was at her locker, getting her book when Regina ran up, waving the article in the air. When Gretchen caught sight of the headline, she shouted "Not. A.Gain!" "Yes! Again! We are going to the art museum after school" said Regina.
The Museum, Again!?
The girls arrived at the art museum, it was crowded with reporters holding cameras, they were here for the pictures of the ghost in the spooky painting. "We've been here for hours, I'm leaving" said a reporter, the rest of the crew left.
"Thank goodness the ghost didn't appear while the reporters were here." "Yet, who was the person in the newspaper that saw the ghost again?" "...Lindsay!" said Regina. "She has a locker right next to mine!" said Gretchen. After an hour, the two friends became impatient.
"Meet me here at midnight, the ghost may appear then!" whispered Regina. "Okay, I'll bring my torch, you bring your spy camera." whispered Gretchen.
Regina has a little camera that you can put around your fingers so you can spy on people without them noticing.
Regina did her homework until her parents told her to go to bed. Regina turned off the lights, stuffed some pillows in her blanket to pretend she was sleeping and left the house through a window.
Gretchen was waiting beside the painting. "Did you bring your spy camera?" she asked. "I brought four." said Regina.
They started filming the painting. At first, nothing happened, but then, the ghost stuck its head out the window, then through the painting and grabbed the spy cameras, and stared at Gretchen and Regina with its groggily eyes. "I I'MM W WWAARRNNIINNGG YOU" it said.
"We have rights to find out the truth!" said Gretchen. "Yeah! replied Regina. "But you don't have rights to sneak in the art museum off hours." the ghost said. "Please don't tell! We can't spend our lives in jail,
I want to go to college and be a doctor!" said Regina. "Okay, I won't tell unless you don't pass this night to anyone. I have my way of finding out what you are doing every second." said the ghost. "Okay, we won't tell anyone." Regina blurted out.
Suddenly, the ghost vanished after one last word, "Remember..." it warned.
The next morning was the starting of summer vacation, the friends planned to do all their homework and spend most of the time left to beat the ghost.
Regina went over to Gretchen's home to do their homework, after they searched the internet to find the meaning of the painting of the spooky house.
"It says here that the painter was going sight-seeing when he saw a spooky house with a dead garden, so he sat beside the house and painted it, but something weird entered the painting and the painter died after.
Before he died, he muttered "I swear I saw a white shadow entering my painting..." he gasped and closed his eyes. The hospital checked his body and organs, but he was not hurt or sick, no body knew why he died. " said Gretchen.
"It must be about that ghost in the painting." said Regina. "But why did it enter the painting in the first place?" said Gretchen. She checked the internet.
"The actual spooky house is in a place named Swankado in Canada" said Regina.
"I know what you are thinking, count me out." said Gretchen. "I can't go to Canada by myself." said Regina. "Fine!" said Gretchen.
And so, they bought tickets for the train to Canada and began to pack their things.
"I'm packing dozens of spay cameras." said Regina. "I'm bringing an underwear." said Gretchen. "Gretchen, bring some underwears, you can't just bring one! And you need to bring some money. We are staying on the train for five days to get to Canada." said Regina.
"How about the toilets?" said Gretchen. "There are toilets in every room, Gretchen." "There are rooms?" "Yes! with two bunk beds and a toilet! Clear?" "How about dinner?" "A tray comes through every room and we pay for the food, okay?"
On the Train
The girls have been on the train for a few hours and Gretchen was already getting impatient. "How long are we going to ride in this dumb train?" she said. "Four days and twelve hours." said Regina.
"What?" said Gretchen. " You can take a nap to pass some time." "What does some mean?" "A few hours. I'm going to read." said Regina.
After a while, Gretochen passed out on her bed and Regina was deep, deep inside story land.
Regina was right, napping did pass time. Gretchen woke up just in time for supper, the food tray was filled with vegetables, soup and meat.
Regina took out her wallet to pay for the food when the maid said " Give it to the cook after you finish."
After Gretchen and Regina finished supper, they walked to the kitchen to pay for the food. It was dark in the train, everyone was in their room, sleeping, the girls could hear their snoring outside the door.
"It's starting to get a little creepy, like someone is following us" whispered Regina. "Of course not, who would be up so late?" said Gretchen. Suddenly, Regina pulled her behind a box.
"Sshh..." she said, "Okay, let's go back to our room now!" Regina shouted, "We'll see who will be following us now." she whispered.
A ghost appeared in front of the girl's door, they recognized it immediately. "The ghost from the spooky painting......" said Regina. "Sshh!" said Gretchen.
Gretchen's "Sshh!"was a bit too loud. Soon the ghost turned around, "Who's there?"
Gretchen gasped loudly. "Gretchen! Stop making sounds!" whispered Regina.
After a while, the ghost disappeared. "That was close."said Gretchen. "Close? You call that close? That thing nearly toasted us!" said Regina.
"Well, we have to be careful about what we do from now on." said Gretchen.
The girls paid for their food and scrambled back to their room.
The few days after were simple, nothing happened, it was very boring.
On the last day on the train, the girls decided to sleep late and only wake up to eat. That way the day would pass by faster.
However after lunch, neither of them could all asleep, so they surfed the internet about the spooky house in the painting.
"After the painter painted the house and died, nobody went inside the house or stepped on the dead garden beside it. Soon it was abandoned for months. "Gretchen read aloud.
Finally, the girls arrived Canada. They didn't book a hotel, so they were going to camp in their mini tent. They needed to save their money for food and their tickets to go home, so far they had hundred dollars each.
They kept the money for the train tickets in an envelope, then they put it in a special part in their back packs.
The girls managed to find a shop that sold maps about Canada. They bought two and started looking for Swankado.
"There!" said Regina. They spotted Swankado "It says here that Swankado was once very famous for sight-seeing, but after the painter died there, it became less crowded." Regina read aloud. "Look, we are here we can take the cab-" "No Gretchen, we need to save."
Regina spent fifteen minutes planning their route to Swankado, then they were off.
Walking......"Are We There Yet?"
The girls have walked far an hour through the streets of Canada. Gretchen was good at sports but Regina was not, she was good at everything except sports, so while Gretchen jumped and ran, Regina sweated and panted.
However, Regina was still Gretchen's friend, so Gretchen waited for her even though she kept asking, "Are we there yet?" "I suppose not." Gretchen would answer.
It was soon night, so they camped in their tent.
The next day, Gretchen and Regina started their journey again.
The passed lakes, brides and farms. Finally, they arrived Swankado. "Hurray! No more running!" cried Regina, "Gretchen we arrived!"
Gretchen did not answer, she was shocked by the view. "It's bbbb...beautiful!" she spluttered.
"Yes, it is!" said Regina.
Beside them was a lake filled with fish, fallen leaves, floated across the water. Trees with sweet tasting apples caught their eyes, no wonder it was so famous for sight-seeing!
One thing that got all their interest was a broken down house. "The spooky house in the spooky painting!!!" cried Gretchen.
"We must go in!" said Regina. "What? You expect me to go inside a house where someone died?" said Gretchen. "Yes! That's what we are here for!" said Regina, and she pulled Gretchen into the house.
The house was wet, everywhere was soaked. The girls crept through the creaking wooden floor, trying not to make a single sound
Suddenly, a white figure floated pass them. Regina know Gretchen would scream, so she covered her mouth before she could make a sound.
However Gretchen didn't, she was white with shock. Regina pulled Gretchen to her, then she followed the ghost. The ghost didn't seem to notice her or Gretchen, it just kept floating and floating.
Suddenly it stopped and turned around, "Aahh, what do we have here? Those little girls are trying to solve some mystery."
The girls were stunned, they recognized its face right away. "The painter who died!" said Regina.
"Yes, it's me, I was also the one who was on the train." it said. "How about the art display?"
"It was the ghost who killed me, after I died, I became a ghost, the ghost who killed me is named Emily. Emily explained to me that she saw me having too much pressure as an artist,
so she killed me while I was sight-seeing, being a ghost is so much fun!!! But she does not want anyone to know about her, so she hid in my painting. Somehow, she managed to stay alive in the painting but now failed." the ghost said.
"Oh, that means she died?" said Gretchen, finally being able to speak. "Yes, but she passed all her power to me." "What power?"
"Ghosts live for five hundred years only and they cannot control any humans, but with Emily's power, I can live forever and I can control human''s brains.
Mostly, I can go back to my body and my life will start all over again.
I will become a baby again but I still have my brain with the same knowledge as now and I will still be a ghost." it said.
"That means the world will be reversed to the same day you were born! Will your life change?" said Regina.
"No, I will be forced to make my decisions the same way as before."
"Oh, we must go now, nice meeting you, bye!"
Gretchen said quickly, and she pulled Regina to the door.
"Mystery solved!!" said Gretchen.
The next day, the girls got on the train back home.
Five days later, the girls arrived back home, "I couldn't WAIT to tell mum and dad what happened! They will be so proud of us!" cried Regina.
And their parents were so happy for them.
