It was a bright, warm day in Hong Kong. The sun was shining down on S.A.R. University. There was barely a cloud in the sky. In the school library, Johnson, a fellow student, was bossily asking everyone about their future careers. “How about your career, Jimmy?” he asked.

Jimmy had a brief flashback of when, his elementary teacher had also asked about his future career. “Jimmy, what would you like to be when you grow up……?”
“I want to be a pilot, fly all over the world, and take people to different places!” Jimmy had replied.

“I want to be a pilot,” Jimmy declared.
“A pilot? That’s too ambitious for a dumb boy like you!” Johnson sneered. He wore a mean, ugly face.
“Yes, and I’m going to take the test after graduation!” Jimmy replied, determined to follow his dreams by getting into the Aircraft Academy.

The major exam came three months later. Jimmy, along with two thousand other young hopefuls lined up outside the Aircraft Academy, waiting for the test. Jimmy was bouncing around with nerves, excited. However, he couldn’t help remembering Johnson’s words, “A pilot? That’s too ambitious for a dumb boy like you…!”

Jimmy was called and entered the building nervously. First, there was a challenging written test, followed by a practical flying test. He was closely monitored by a serious examiner, who kept taking notes, and muttering under his breath. Jimmy was cracking under the pressure and inevitably made some careless mistakes.

A few weeks later, Jimmy’s results arrived. Jimmy anxiously ripped open the envelope:

    Dear Mr. Paddington,
We are sorry to inform you that you were not accepted into the Academy. However, if you wish to try out again, you may do so next year.

Jimmy thought his dreams were over…

Overcoming his disappointment, Jimmy found work as a shopkeeper in a crammed bookstore. He would stack piles of books onto shelves, assist customers, file records, check shipments, drag his exhausted body back home and repeat the same routine every day. His life was so dull, he nearly forgot his dream……

One night, Jimmy dreamt of his Grandfather, who was a former RAF pilot.
“Jimmy, you must follow your dream,” his Grandfather reminded him.
“I don’t have a dream anymore,” Jimmy replied sadly.
“You do, of becoming a pilot,” his Grandfather declared inspirationally. “You can do anything if you really try.’’

The next day, filled with energy and determination, he quit his job and sprinted to the library. He spent the next nine months studying extremely hard. He learnt about the structure of different types of airplanes, aviation history, observed pilots and practiced harder than ever. This time, he would succeed.

Finally, the day came. Jimmy performed confidently during the test, and passed with honours! Jimmy had landed his ultimate dream job! This was a lifetime achievement, his parents were so proud! Always believe in yourself and try your best! Never give up…your hard work will always pay off eventually!
