In the olden days there lived a very wealthy king. In his beautiful palace he had 2 servants, John and Tom.
They worked very hard and the king paid them quite well.
However, one day John said, “We work very hard but the king only pays us a little money.”

Tom said, “Don’t be greedy. We earn more money than many people in the kingdom.”
Yet John was still not happy. “The king is so rich. He should give us more.”
Then one day, John was cleaning the king’s bedroom when he saw a beautiful belt lying unattended.

The belt had big shiny diamonds and a luxurious buckle. John thought, “I will steal this belt and sell it.”
He checked no one was looking and picked it up. It was too large to carry without being seen so he wore it and hid it under his coat.

On the way home, John suddenly felt water on his head. A woman had poured all her dirty water out of a high window onto him.
“Sorry!” she shouted down. John was angry because that had never happened before.
Then, a pig kicked mud all over John.

Cold, wet and dirty, John got home. “I need to have a nice warm bath.” He took his coat off and then tried to take the belt he had stolen off. However, it was stuck. John was confused.
He looked around and saw some of his clothes were stolen.

“What a terrible day!” John said angrily.
He wondered who would steal from HIM. He had some nice clothes but THIS was not like when HE stole from the RICH king.
He NEEDED these clothes. John became more and more angry and he wanted to find the thief.

John suddenly realised all his bad luck had started after stealing the belt.
“Oh no! The belt has a curse!” John shouted.
However, he still didn’t feel bad about stealing from the rich king and he still wanted to find the thief who stole from him.

John went to look for the thief and he saw a small boy wearing his coat.
The boy was cold, wet and hungry.
“Where did you get that coat?” John angrily asked.
The boy was scared. “I took it from a rich man’s house as he had so many clothes.”

“That wasn’t a rich man’s house. That was my house!” John shouted.
“But… it was so warm, and there was food on the table. He had many nice clothes. He must be so wealthy. I just live here on the street,” said the boy crying.

John suddenly saw how lucky he was. He felt sorry for the little boy and said, “I’m sorry for shouting at you. Come to my home and have some food and a warm bath.”
    The boy said, “Thank you!”

Later, John tried to take the belt off and it came off easily.
The curse was broken. John knew he must return the belt to the king.
The boy and John went to the palace. John let the boy wear the coat because it was cold.

In the palace John found the king.
“I am so sorry sir. I stole this belt but I’m returning it. Also please can you let this boy work as a servant? He is very poor and needs money.”
The king forgave John and let the boy work in the palace.
