Ever since Holly was a young girl, she had loved playing the piano. She adored the way every piece had a different character, the way a single piano piece could convey deep emotions, and even entire stories!
As the years went by, Holly’s passion for the piano soared.
One day, Holly bolted home from school, her teeth chattering in exhilaration.
‘Mum! There's a piano competition in a few months!’
Holly signed up for the competition within a heartbeat. She practised immensely hard every day, but never found her playing good enough.
As she began to doubt herself,
her passion began to slip away...
Finally, one tiring day, she collapsed onto her bed in anguish, feeling incredibly discouraged.
All of a sudden, a loud thud woke her from her daze. She turned around cautiously, to see an enormous statue towering over her. The statue was entirely made
out of stone, except for his glistening steel sword. His heavy armour and facial features were very intricately made, with his tidy hair in a bun. A surge of panic overcame her and her legs shook in terror.
'Don't panic, Holly - I'm here to help you.'
the statue said to her kindly.
"A... speaking statue?" Holly thought with confusion.
'I'm a Terracotta Warrior. I was created by the people of the Qin Dynasty to accompany their Emperor to the spirit world.
'I know you have been practising hard for a piano competition.' he smiled kindly.
'Yes, but with such mediocre playing, I might as well not enter...' Holly exclaimed, looking down at her hands sorrowfully. The Terracotta Warrior paced the floor.
'Holly, there is something very important you must know. Not everything in life is about how well you do.
Winning or losing doesn't actually matter as long as you try your best,' he explained.
'Ever since my army of Terracotta Warriors were discovered, there has been an amazing story to tell. Your piano performance would have the opposite fate if you gave up now - it would never be
heard and your hard work would be wasted.'
Holly now understood everything in a whole new light and knew she would cherish the Terracotta Warrior's words forever. He disappeared into wisps of smoke like the remnants of a flame.
On the day of the competition, a flood of negative thoughts
once again overwhelmed Holly like a surge of water flooding out of a dam; What if she made a mistake? What if she didn't win? However, the Terracotta Warrior's words quickly came to her mind...
Holly walked onto the stage, her face a mask of confidence.
As soon as she put her hands on the keyboard, the audience was awestruck. There were magnificent variations in speed, volume, and tone; as Holly's fingers danced over the keyboard, the audience was mesmerized at how enchanting her playing was.
It no longer mattered to Holly if she would win. As she bowed to a cheering crowd, she felt accomplished and humbled by their rapturous response, knowing that she had shared her work with dignity and pride.1 / 12
