It was an early morning at school. There was a crowd of students reading a notice about a running competition that was to be held a few months from now. The prize was a gold medal and $5000. Everyone wanted to participate because it was such a big prize.
Kelvin was the fastest athlete in school. He never lost a race. His room was full of medals and trophies he had won in swimming, cycling and running races. People thought he was mean, but he was actually a caring person. Ann wanted to join too but she was slow.
At recess, Kelvin overheard Ann talking to her friend Julie. "I want to join the race because my family really needs the money. My father lost his job recently and we now have difficulty paying my school fees."
"I'm sorry. Maybe I can help to train you," offered Julie.
Over the next few weeks, Julie helped Ann train. It took her a long time to practice. She ran around the park for hours every day after school. She asked Julie to record her time which she always tried to break each time.
"I must keep going!" Ann reminded herself.
Ann's parents knew that she was trying to help the family. They told her, "Ann, we know you are trying to help us by winning the competition, but you don't need to, we will be fine."
"Don't worry, I love you both so much!" answered Ann.
On the other side of town, Kelvin was practicing hard too. As his parents were quite wealthy, they hired the best personal coach in town. Kelvin was determined to break his personal record and display another gold medal in his collection.
Weeks passed. Ann gradually became faster. Unfortunately, Ann's speed paled in comparison to Kelvin's, but she kept practicing. She never gave up. Kelvin used to see her practice every day. He could see how hard she was training. At school, everyone was discussing about who would win the race.
Finally, the big day arrived. Ann arrived at the playground to do some warm up exercises.
"I think Ann will win. She's been practicing very hard," commented a girl.
"I think Kelvin will win. He always does. He's the best!" answered another.
"I'm going to try my best," thought Ann.
The participants were ready. "Beep!" The competitors heard the whistle and ran as fast as they could. Leading the crowd was Kelvin with Ann behind him. They ran like the wind until Kelvin tripped and fell. Ann saw him and wanted to give him a hand.
"Don't stop for me, keep going!" Kelvin shouted. It seemed that there was no stopping her and Ann won the race. After receiving the prize, Ann walked over to Kelvin who was resting on a bench.
"Congratulations!" Kelvin beamed.
"Thank you for helping me," whispered Ann.
"For what?" Kelvin smiled mischievously.
"For purposely tripping so that I could win," Ann replied, "You sacrificed your win to help me!"
Kelvin stood up from the bench, unhurt......1 / 12
