Sophia loved to go to Toronto on holiday. She loved how clean the streets were and how nice and polite the people were. She liked how you could drink water straight from the tap because it was so clean. There were street performers everywhere and always so much to do!
But before she knew it, the summer was over and they were on the plane back to Hong Kong. Sophia missed the street performers, the bike paths everywhere, the drinking from the tap and the clean air.
A week after they arrived in Hong Kong, Mary, Sophia’s sister, got sick. They took her to the doctor and were told it was because of air pollution. Mary had to stay at the hospital. Sophia was worried, and wanted to do something to help, but what could she do?
After weeks of brainstorming, Sophia had a plan. She would raise awareness about air pollution and help her sister get better! Sophia remembered that her school, and a few other schools had competed in a Greenest School Competition. Sophia’s school had never won, but she always wanted to win.
The next day at school, Sophia came in with a bag bursting with posters. The night before, Sophia had made and printed posters for pollution awareness. At break time, Sophia and her friends put up posters on every notice board around the school. They were exhausted.
Ever since Mary got sick, Sophia had been more motivated to spread awareness so others wouldn’t suffer like her sister. They finished putting up the posters the following next day. By the end of the week, Sophia had posted hundreds of posters around her school, home and community.
After Sophia put up posters, she thought about other environmental problems. She wanted to solve those too! So she created an awareness blog and volunteered to prepare a speech for the school’s Green assembly. By the end of the assembly, students started to spread awareness around their communities and homes.
Soon, the whole school was following Sophia's suggestions. They didn’t pack lunches in plastic bags, they turned off lights and air conditioners when they weren’t being used and set up recycling bins next by trash cans. After a month, Sophia realized her school had won the Greenest School Award!
Sophia was given a small, shiny green trophy that read:” GREENEST MOTIVATOR” in shimmery silver, written along the top. She was so pleased that she had helped her school win something.
Sophia's parents were very proud. Mary soon got better and started helping her sister spread awareness to friends in other schools. Sophia still spreads awareness, and hopes everyone does the same.
