There was a girl called Meraila. She was fourteen. She was tall and slim with sparkling violet hair and lips as red as blood.
Meraila was special, for one thing, in the way she travelled. She whizzed around in a gorgeous, shiny flying machine made of gold.
Meraila lived in
a castle above the town. Meraila’s mother was the queen’s maid. Years ago in a fight against a monster, she died while protecting the queen. The king therefore took care of Meraila out of gratitude.
Meraila was special in another way. When she was small, her
mother always told her about knights and how they protected the town. Therefore, she always wanted to be a knight.
One day, the queen of Water Village, Water Queen, made a unannounced visit to Meraila. The monster that had killed her mother appeared again.
“Meraila, we need your help!"
said Water Queen.
“But I don’t know how to fight.” replied Meraila.
“We will help you!” said Water Queen.
Together they flew in the flying machine to the castle of Ethan, Water Queen’s brother, who was an elf and a prince. Ethan was expecting
them and had already gathered the supplies: an armour, a silver sword and an owl called Owly.
“Greetings, sister. Is this the lady who wants to a knight?” asked Ethan.
“Yes, she will save us.” replied Water Queen.
He designed a crash course to train Meraila
in three aspects: physical strength, fighting skills and knowledge. Ethan made Meraila run around the hills and work out every morning to build body strength. In the afternoon, Ethan taught her the skills of fighting with the sword. In the evening, Ethan studied with Meraila the vows, oath, codes of
knighthood and everything about the monster. He mentioned in particular the monster’s habit of always looking down, making it vulnerable to attacks from above.
After three months, Meraila had learned much but did not feel ready to fight the monster alone.
“Don’t worry. I'll go
with you.” said Ethan.
Meraila put on the armour and carried the sword. Water Queen gave her Owly the owl which was strong and had good eyesight for flight in darkness.
On Owly’s back, Meraila dived from above to hit the monster’s head.
Just as Meraila was about to pierce its head, the monster’s tail flipped and hit her. She and Owly fell into the ocean, stunt but not wounded.
Ethan saw that Meraila needed help and ordered his dragons to restrain the monster’s tail. While the monster was blinded by
light reflected from below, Meraila and Owly ascended and cut off its head with Meraila’s silver sword. Meraila made a twist and succeeded.
“You had not only performed as trained. You were also innovative and brave.” commented Ethan.
Meraila was formally conferred knighthood by Water Queen.
