It was a beautiful morning in the village where the golden sun rose over the tall, emerald green mountains with glistening snow white peaks.

People were just getting out of bed. The boys were getting dressed to go to school, and the girls getting ready for their cooking and sewing lessons. The village system was such that the boys got schooling and the girls learned to be good wives.

Everyone was happy, and things ran smoothly for a while. But all that changed when a girl decided she wanted to learn.

Her name was Rose. She wasn’t happy about just learning to be a better housewife. She had always wanted to learn, not just cook and sew.

So one early morning, she sneaked out of the house and climbed the tall ladder by the old schoolhouse.Through a crack in the wall she could see the writings on the ancient, cracked blackboard and hear the teacher’s booming voice.

She eagerly started listening to the classes and reading at night by a lamp from her brother’s book.

Day after day, she climbed the ladder and took notes, gradually learning more and more. Everyday she would determinedly go up the ladder to learn.

Then one afternoon, she met a group of girls who also wanted to learn. She approached them cautiously. “Hi, I just wanted to tell you what I’ve been doing,” she told them. She told of climbing up the ladder to listen.

The girls were soon very interested and asked Rose to show them.

Rose taught the girls how to read and write and then all the girls took turns climbing the ladder to learn. Meanwhile, the Headmaster one day chanced upon the girls on the ladder.

This was a nightmare. Little girls were trying to study!!! He feared that the entire village will be upset with him. He decided to approach them and felt that he could put an end to this by setting an impossible task for the girls.

The next morning, the girls found a grim-faced Headmaster by the ladder. They wondered why he was there. He told them that he can’t have girls on a ladder peering into a classroom. However he could accept them into his school, if they pass the final exam.

The anxious and nervous girls knew this was their only chance, so in their spare time they studied hard with Rose teaching the girls from the notes she had.

On testing day, the girls marched into the school. All the boys burst out laughing.

“What are you girls doing here?

“We’re here to take the test,” they replied. The boys laughed even harder but were silenced by the Headmaster’s glare.

The Headmaster passed out the exam papers. Everyone picked up a pencil and buried their heads into their work.

When everyone had finished, they all handed the answers onto the desk. Everyone walked out of the room very nervous. The boys were wondering, ‘Did I meet the minimum requirement of 70% to pass?’ And the girls were wondering, ‘Did I score high enough to get in?’

The girls scored between 84% and 95% with Rose scoring 95.The boys scored between 72% and 83%.There was a lot of chattering and discomfort in the village, but eventually they reconciled to the girls attending school and this helped this picturesque village become the most prosperous one too.
