Today, I had lunch with Kate and Bonnie who worked in the same hospital with me. Bonnie asked ‘Penny, I have heard that you were naughty before. Why do you become nice and polite now?’ I replied, ‘Let me tell you my story.’

Fourteen years ago, I was in P.5. I was very naughty, lazy and rude. I always bullied my classmates. I never passed my exam.

One day, I played tricks on my classmate, Jane. I took away her book and drew something on it. I did that repeatedly. Finally, Jane’s mum called the school. Mum mum and I were asked to meet my class teacher.

The teacher said, ‘This is the last warning I have to give for your behaviour. You must behave well and apologize to Jane.’ I felt annoyed so I answered badly, ‘Sorry!’ My mum looked at me angrily and said sorry for me again.

Before the exam, I played the computer games all day. One day, I got a call when I was playing the game at home. ‘May I speak to Penny, please?’ ‘Speaking.’

‘Hello, Penny. I am the nurse of Queen Elizabeth Hospital. You mum was rescued in a car accident two hours ago. She banged her head and broke her legs. Please come to the hospital right now.’

I was shocked. I rushed to the hospital immediately and forgot said goodbye to the nurse. I was afraid that I couldn’t see my mum again.

I was very worried when I was sitting at the bedside of my mum. When my mum woke up, she said, ‘Penny, you have to be a good student. You can do that!’ ‘I will be a good student, Mum! I will not let you be disappointed again!’

I stopped bullying my classmates since then and I tried to be nice to others. My classmates felt very surprised. I worked much harder and I got 82 marks in the exam. Everyone was glad to see my change.

‘Wow! Your experience is so special and encouraging!’ If your old classmates and teachers know that you become a doctor now, they will be very proud of you!’ said Bonnie.
